Unloaders

Fleet and trade details

Most vessels are of Panamax size with gravity-fed conveyor belt systems and a boom, whereas the last two ships in the list below feature deck systems with cranes, grabs, hoppers, conveyor belts and a boom.

The Oldendorff Carriers fleet of self-unloaders consists of:

Name TDW Type t per hour
MV "Bernhard Oldendorff" 77,500 Gravity belt self-unloader, boom 5,000
MV "Yeoman Brook" 77,500 Gravity belt self-unloader, boom 5,000
MV "Sophie Oldendorff" 70,000 Gravity belt self-unloader, boom 5,000
MV "Johanna Oldendorff" 67,500 Cranes, hoppers, belts, boom 2,000
MV "Harmen Oldendorff" 66,000 Gravity belt self-unloader, boom 5,000
MV "Christoffer Oldendorff" 62,500 Gravity belt self-unloader, boom 4,000
MV "Alice Oldendorff" 50,000 Cranes, hoppers, belts, boom 1,500

"Johanna Oldendorff" is able to perform top-off or lightering operations with her side-mounted cranes. Our seven self-unloaders truly are workhorses: they carry an impressive 9 million tons of bulk cargo per annum with nearly 200 port calls.

All technical management and crewing of these ships is done from the OLDENDORFF CARRIERS head office.

Trading areas

The main trading area is along the US and Canadian East and West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the North Coast and East Coast of South America. The major commodities carried are coal, gypsum, aggregates, limestone and other bulk cargoes. Short-haul trades are combined in an efficient contract network.

Main features

The gravity and hybrid self-unloading ships offer a discharging rotation which is faster than conventional bulk carriers and will reduce turnaround time, free up congested berths and reduce port costs and demurrage. As they require no shore-based unloading systems, self-unloaders can operate and discharge cargo in any accessible waterway, thereby reducing the need for large capital investments on the shore side. The self-unloaders offer:

  • a range of unloading rates up to 5,000 tons per hour
  • the ability to discharge on shore or off shore with no or minimal capital investment at the receiving facility
  • 24-hour-a-day operation, seven days a week, without the expense of stevedores or clean-up crews
  • saving of towage costs due to the fitted bow thrusters
  • virtual elimination of cargo wastage, as belt unloaders mean holds do not need to be cleaned
  • enclosed booms, dust collection and suppression systems for maximum protection of the environment

In short, these highly specialised ships ensure a safe, fast, reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally responsible method of delivering cargo.
